Painting Description
"Qual la descañonan" is an etching by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, part of his famous series of prints known as "Los Caprichos." Created between 1797 and 1798, "Los Caprichos" is a satirical series that critiques the follies and superstitions of Goya's contemporary Spanish society. The series consists of 80 prints, which were published as an album in 1799.
The title "Qual la descañonan" translates to "How they pluck her!" and is numbered as plate 73 in the series. In this etching, Goya depicts a scene of social commentary, focusing on the exploitation and mistreatment of women. The image shows a young woman being restrained by a group of grotesque figures, who appear to be stripping away her clothing or plucking feathers from her body, a metaphor for the stripping of her dignity and autonomy. The figures surrounding her are often interpreted as representations of the clergy or other societal authorities, who are complicit in or responsible for her abuse.
Goya's use of dark humor and grotesque imagery in "Qual la descañonan" serves to underscore the harsh critique of the corruption and moral decay he perceived in the institutions of his time. The work is exemplary of Goya's innovative technique in etching and aquatint, which he used to achieve a wide range of tonal effects, enhancing the dramatic impact of the scene.
As with many of Goya's works in "Los Caprichos," "Qual la descañonan" employs ambiguity and allegory, leaving much to the interpretation of the viewer. The series as a whole was a bold and risky project for the artist, as it challenged the established order and the powerful figures of his day. Despite the initial public offering, the provocative nature of the prints led Goya to withdraw them from sale shortly after their release, fearing political retribution. He later gifted the plates to King Charles IV of Spain in exchange for a pension for his son.
Today, "Qual la descañonan" and the rest of "Los Caprichos" are held in high regard as some of Goya's most important and influential works, providing insight into the artist's perspective on the human condition and the social issues of his era. The series continues to be widely studied and exhibited, with original prints held in numerous museum collections around the world.
