Painting Description
"Qual la descañonan" is an etching by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, part of his famous series "Los Caprichos." Created between 1797 and 1798, "Los Caprichos" is a set of 80 prints that critique various aspects of Spanish society at the end of the 18th century, including superstition, ignorance, and the corruption of the church and the nobility. The title of this particular etching, "Qual la descañonan," translates to "How they pluck her," and is numbered as plate 73 in the series.
The image depicts a young woman being held down by a group of grotesque figures, who are plucking feathers from her back, a metaphorical representation of the exploitation and oppression faced by women of the time. The work is a powerful social commentary, reflecting Goya's disillusionment with the moral and social decay he perceived in Spanish society. The artist uses dark humor and satire to convey his critical messages, employing a combination of etching and aquatint techniques to achieve rich tonal effects and dramatic contrasts of light and shadow.
"Los Caprichos" was initially offered for sale to the public, but due to the sensitive nature of its content and the potential for political backlash, Goya withdrew the series from sale shortly after its release. The prints were later gifted to the Spanish crown in exchange for a pension for his son. Today, "Los Caprichos" is recognized as one of Goya's most important works, and "Qual la descañonan" stands as a significant piece within the series, exemplifying the artist's skillful use of the medium to convey biting social criticism. The series as a whole is considered a precursor to modern art, with its bold expressions and exploration of the human condition.
