Painting Description
"Ni más ni menos" (Neither more nor less) is an etching by the Spanish painter and printmaker Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, created as part of his famous series "Los Caprichos". "Los Caprichos" is a set of 80 prints in aquatint and etching created by Goya in 1797 and 1798, and published as an album in 1799. The works of this series are known for their satirical and critical nature, reflecting Goya's disillusionment with Spanish society at the end of the 18th century, particularly with the aristocracy and the clergy.
The "Ni más ni menos" etching is numbered 37 in the series and depicts a scene where an artist, possibly a self-portrait of Goya, is drawing a donkey, which is being held in position by a figure representing folly, while another figure, symbolizing ignorance, is sharpening a pencil. The image is a commentary on the inability of the uneducated to recognize their own limitations and the foolishness of trying to make them appear as something they are not. It reflects Goya's contempt for the pretensions of those in power and the sycophants who flatter them.
The title, "Ni más ni menos", suggests that the donkey should be represented neither more nor less than what it is, a direct admonition against flattery and false representation. The work is exemplary of Goya's use of allegory and dark humor to critique the social and political issues of his time.
As with the other prints in the "Los Caprichos" series, "Ni más ni menos" was withdrawn from public sale shortly after its initial release due to political pressures. The series was later gifted to the Royal Calcography in 1803 by Goya, and subsequent printings have been made from the original plates.
The "Los Caprichos" series, including "Ni más ni menos", remains one of Goya's most important and influential works, offering insight into his innovative artistic techniques and his profound observations on the human condition. The prints are held in numerous museum collections around the world and continue to be the subject of scholarly study and public interest.
