Painting Description
"Los Desastres de la Guerra" ("The Disasters of War") is a series of 82 prints created by Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes between1810 and 1820. The series, which remains one of Goya's most famous works, offers a stark, unflinching depiction of the horrors of war, as experienced through the Peninsular War and the subsequent political instability that rocked Spain in the early 19th century.
G began working on the prints during the Peninsular War, which saw Spain, with the aid of Britain and Portugal, rebelling against Napoleon Bonaparte's French Empire. The series is characterized by its raw depiction of violence, brutality, and suffering, often featuring the dead and dying, mutilated bodies, and scenes of execution and torture. In addition to the bloody realities of war, Goya also focuses on the famine that gripped Madrid in the war aftermath and the general desolation and disarray brought upon by the conflict.
The first 47 prints in the series focus on the horrors of war itself, while subsequent prints turn their focus towards the political corruption and social issues that persisted in Spain even after the war's end. The last group of the prints shift into the realm of allegory and surrealism, using symbolic and fantastical imagery to express Goya's disillusionment and despair.
"Los Desastres de la Guerra" was one of the major works of Goya's mature period, but the series was not published until several decades after his death. Regarded as a major work of war protest and a pioneering effort in the representation of war realities, "Los Desastres de la Guerra" continues to hold influence over many artists and critics alike.
