Painting Description
''Los Caprichos'' is a series of 80 prints in aquatint and etching created by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, commonly known as Francisco Goya. Created between 1797 and 1798, and published as an album in 1799, the work is Goya's artistic expression of his disillusionment with the social and political issues of his time, reflecting his critical view of Spanish society. The prints in ''Los Caprichos'' are often satirical and caricature-like, depicting folly and foolishness among all classes of Spanish society, including the clergy and the aristocracy.
Goya, who was already an established painter in the courts and a commentator on social practices, used ''Los Caprichos'' to challenge the status quo and to highlight the superstitious and backward nature of Spanish society. The series is considered a complex, enigmatic work of art that uses the fantastical and grotesque to present a world turned upside down. Goya's masterful use of the aquatint medium adds a dreamlike quality to the images, enhancing their nightmarish and surrealistic atmosphere.
The first edition of ''Los Caprichos'' was withdrawn from sale shortly after its release due to the controversial nature of the prints and fear of political reprisal. However, the series gained popularity after Goya donated the plates to the Royal Chalcography in 1803. Since then, ''Los Caprichos'' has been recognized as a seminal work in the history of Western art and has been the subject of extensive art historical study. The series has had a profound influence on the development of modern satirical illustration and continues to be relevant for its incisive critique of human folly.
In ''Los Caprichos'', Goya's innovative techniques and his bold exploration of the themes of ignorance, superstition, and corruption have cemented the series as a pivotal moment in the transition from the Old Masters to the modern artistic movements that followed. The prints remain a powerful testament to Goya's artistic genius and his acute social consciousness.
