Painting Description
"Los Caprichos" is a series of 80 prints in aquatint and etching created by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, which marks a significant artistic and social commentary in the history of Western art. Created between 1797 and 1798, and published as an album in 1799, this work is a satirical critique of late 18th-century Spanish society, its superstitions, and its moral decay. Goya, who was then the court painter to the Spanish Crown, took a bold step away from his commissioned works to produce something deeply personal and reflective of his views on the folly and foolishness he saw in his society.
The series is renowned for its imaginative elements, its intricate use of shadow and light, and its exploration of themes such as the irrationality of human behavior, the corruption of the church and the nobility, and the broader vices and virtues that permeate society. Goya's use of caprice (capricho in Spanish) as a concept is evident in the whimsical, often grotesque imagery that challenges the viewer's perceptions and invites multiple interpretations. The prints blend the real with the fantastical, employing a mix of allegory, satire, and caricature, and are considered precursors to the Romantic and Expressionist movements that would follow in European art.
"Los Caprichos" was initially met with controversy due to its critical perspective on the church and the monarchy, leading Goya to withdraw the prints from sale shortly after their release. He eventually gifted the plates to the Royal Calcography in 1803, ensuring their preservation. Today, the series is housed in various prestigious collections, including the Museo del Prado in Madrid, and is celebrated for its artistic innovation, its bold critique of societal flaws, and its profound influence on the development of modern art. Through "Los Caprichos," Goya not only cemented his legacy as a master printmaker and social commentator but also laid the groundwork for the modern artistic exploration of personal and political themes.
