Painting Description
"Feminine Folly" (Disparate Feminino), also known as plate 6 of the "Disparates" series, is an etching by the Spanish romantic painter and printmaker Francisco de Goya y Lucientes. Created between 1815 and 1823, this work is part of a series of prints that explore themes of folly and irrationality. The "Disparates" series, also known as "Proverbios" or "Follies," consists of 22 prints, although Goya originally intended to produce more.
In "Feminine Folly," Goya depicts a scene that is both enigmatic and rich in allegorical content, characteristic of the entire series. The artwork features a group of women floating in the air, with some seated on a flying carpet, suggesting a departure from reality and an entry into the realm of fantasy or madness. The imagery can be interpreted as a critique of societal norms, particularly the roles and perceptions of women during Goya's time.
The etching is executed in Goya's typical style for the series, using aquatint to achieve deep tonal variations, which enhances the dreamlike and mysterious quality of the scene. "Feminine Folly" is noted for its dark, foreboding atmosphere and its complex, ambiguous symbolism that invites various interpretations, reflecting Goya's disillusionment with the Spanish society of his era.
This work, like others in the "Disparates" series, was not published during Goya's lifetime. It was first printed in 1864, several decades after his death, and has since been analyzed as an important part of his oeuvre that offers insight into his innovative artistic vision and his critical perspective on human behavior.
