Painting Description
"Disparates No.2 Torheit der Furcht" (also known as "The Folly of Fear") is one of the works from the series of prints known as "Los Disparates" or "The Proverbs" by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746–1828). Created later in his life, between 1815 and 1823, and published posthumously in 1864, this series is renowned for its enigmatic and often nightmarish imagery, reflecting Goya's disillusionment with the social and political situation of his time, as well as his personal struggles.
The "Disparates" series consists of 22 prints, and "Disparates No.2" is particularly noted for its exploration of the theme of irrational human fear. In this etching, Goya depicts a scene filled with ambiguous figures and faces that appear to be consumed by or reacting to an unseen source of terror. The work is characterized by its dark tones and the use of aquatint, which enhances the sense of depth and shadow, contributing to the overall atmosphere of foreboding.
Goya's "Disparates" are considered some of the most influential graphic works in the Western art canon, as they prefigure the Symbolist and Surrealist movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. "Disparates No.2 Torheit der Furcht," like the rest of the series, is interpreted as a commentary on the folly and irrationality that can pervade human behavior, especially in times of social and political unrest. The series was not widely understood at the time of its creation, but it has since been recognized for its profound impact on the evolution of modern art and its commentary on the human condition.
