Painting Description
"Disparate Punctual" (also known as "Punctual Folly") is one of the prints from the series "Los Disparates" (also known as "Los Proverbios"), a set of etchings by the Spanish painter and printmaker Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746–1828). Created later in his life, between 1815 and 1823, and published posthumously, this series is known for its enigmatic and often surreal imagery, reflecting Goya's pessimistic view of society and human behavior.
The "Disparate Punctual" etching, like others in the series, is characterized by its dreamlike and nightmarish qualities, featuring figures that are often distorted or engaging in inscrutable actions. The series as a whole is interpreted as a satirical commentary on the follies and vices of Goya's contemporaries, though the specific meanings of many of the prints remain subjects of debate among art historians.
Goya's "Los Disparates" series is considered a precursor to the works of Surrealists in the 20th century, and "Disparate Punctual" exemplifies the thematic and stylistic elements that contribute to this legacy. The series was not widely known until the 1860s when the plates were discovered and printed. "Disparate Punctual," along with the rest of the "Los Disparates" series, is now recognized as an important work in Goya's oeuvre and in the history of Western art, offering insight into the artist's innovative approach to visual representation and his profound critique of the human condition.
