Painting Description
''The Clothed Maja'' (Spanish: ''La maja vestida'') is a famous oil on canvas painting by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, created between 1800 and 1805. It is a companion piece to ''The Nude Maja'' (Spanish: ''La maja desnuda''), and both paintings are notable for their daring subject matter and enigmatic history. The artwork depicts a reclining female figure, believed to be the same model in the same pose as ''The Nude Maja'', but this time dressed in contemporary clothing.
The identity of the woman portrayed in ''The Clothed Maja'' has been the subject of speculation, with some suggesting she might be the Duchess of Alba, with whom Goya was rumored to have been involved, or Pepita Tudó, the mistress of Prime Minister Manuel de Godoy. However, the true identity of the model remains unconfirmed. The painting is celebrated for its exquisite depiction of the fabrics and textures of the woman's clothing, as well as its sensual portrayal of the female form.
''The Clothed Maja'' and ''The Nude Maja'' were both owned by Godoy, and they were likely intended to be hung together, with ''The Clothed Maja'' concealing ''The Nude Maja'' behind it. The existence of the two paintings became controversial when they were discovered by the Spanish Inquisition in 1815. Goya was summoned to a trial regarding the indecency of ''The Nude Maja'', but the outcome of the trial remains unknown.
Today, ''The Clothed Maja'' is housed in the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain, where it is displayed alongside ''The Nude Maja''. The paintings are considered masterpieces of Spanish art and are among Goya's most famous works, reflecting his bold artistic vision and the changing attitudes toward sexuality and propriety in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
