Painting Description
"Caprichos Plate 32: Porque fue sensible" ("Because She Was Susceptible") is one of the 80 etchings that make up "Los Caprichos," a series by the renowned Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes. Created between 1797 and 1799, "Los Caprichos" is a satirical and critical reflection on the society of Goya's time, encompassing themes such as the follies of human nature, superstition, and the corruption of the church and the nobility.
Plate 32, "Because She Was Susceptible," depicts a young woman surrounded by figures that are presumed to be her family members, who appear distressed and are possibly lamenting her fate. The title suggests that the woman's susceptibility has led to her downfall, which has been interpreted by scholars as a commentary on the vulnerability of women in a society that often exploited their innocence and lack of worldly experience. The etching is executed with Goya's characteristic mastery of aquatint and etching techniques, which he used to create rich tonal effects and convey the dark, often nightmarish atmosphere that pervades the "Caprichos" series.
As with many of Goya's works in "Los Caprichos," "Because She Was Susceptible" employs a combination of realism and fantasy, with the figures rendered in a believable manner while the situation retains an element of the surreal. The series as a whole is considered a precursor to the Romantic movement and has been influential in the development of modern satirical illustration. "Because She Was Susceptible" is held in high regard within the series for its poignant critique of societal norms and the plight of women, and it remains a subject of study for its artistic and historical significance.
