Painting Description
Asmodea 2, also known as "Visión fantástica" (Fantastic Vision), is a painting by the renowned Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes. Created between 1819 and 1823, this work is part of Goya's series of "Black Paintings" (Pinturas Negras), which he painted directly onto the walls of his home, the Quinta del Sordo (House of the Deaf Man), near Madrid. The series is characterized by its dark themes, somber tones, and haunting imagery, reflecting Goya's deepening pessimism and disillusionment during the later years of his life.
Asmodea 2 depicts a surreal and nightmarish scene, featuring two colossal, ghostly figures that appear to be floating or flying over a desolate landscape. The figures are often interpreted as representations of Asmodeus, a demon from Judeo-Christian mythology, and his consort. Below them, a chaotic scene unfolds with tiny, indistinct human figures seemingly engaged in a frantic struggle or fleeing in terror. The painting's eerie atmosphere is heightened by Goya's use of stark contrasts between light and shadow, as well as his loose, expressive brushwork.
The "Black Paintings" were not intended for public display, and it was only after Goya's death that they were transferred from the walls of his home to canvas and eventually brought to the Museo del Prado in Madrid, where they are now housed. Asmodea 2, like the other works in the series, offers a profound insight into Goya's troubled psyche and his preoccupation with themes of madness, fear, and the darker aspects of human nature. The painting remains a powerful testament to Goya's innovative spirit and his ability to convey complex emotional and psychological states through his art.
