Painting Description
"The Old Customs House and the Church of Santa Maria della Salute is an exquisite painting by the renowned Italian painter Francesco Guardi (1712-1793). Widely recognized as a seminal figure of the 18th-century Venetian school of the view (veduta) painting, Guardi is celebrated for his atmospheric depictions of Venice.
The painting features the iconic customs station and the saluting church in the Baroque style, located at the entrance to the Grand Canal in Venice. The Santa Maria della Salute, a basilica designed by Baldassare Longhena, is seen dramatically across the canal from the Dogana da Mar, or Custom’s House. A significant architectural contrast emerges therefrom, between the basilica's monumentality and the customs house's comparatively humble stature.
Francesco Guardi's characteristic loose brushwork conveys a vivid depiction of the shifting light over the Venetian lagoon. He wonderfully captures the ethereal beauty of the city, however, with an approach that tends to symbolize a dream-like quality, quite distinct from the more precise style of Antonio Canaletto, a famous contemporary, thus displaying a unique understanding of the city under different atmospheric conditions.
Known to capture different moods of the city rather than focusing on topographical accuracy, Guardi's portrayal of 'The Old Customs House and the Church of Santa Maria della Salute' is no exception. This painting, like most of his works, serves not just as a geographical depiction, but also encapsulates a deeply atmospheric portrayal of 18th-century Venice that continues to captivate viewers to this day.
