Painting Description
"Uri" is a monumental landscape painting by the eminent Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler (3-1918). Completed in 1897, it showcases Hodler's distinctive approach to Symbolism, inspired by a profound admiration for the sublime beauty and harsh realities of the Swiss. One of Hodler's eminent Symbolist landscapes, "Uri" represents an epochal dialogue between the humanity and nature.
The painting depicts the rugged scenery of central Switzerland near Lake Lucerne, with its rockyags, verdant plateaus, and daunting mountain peaks. The central theme of "Uri" is the transition from the cultivated valley to the inhospitable, yet awe-inspiring, high alpine region. Hodler applied vibrant colors and articulated the natural forms in a realistic yet highly emotive manner to capture the ever-changing moods and vitality of the Swiss landscape.
Hodler's choice of the canton Uri as subject matter was no coincidence, as the area is known as the 'heart of Switzerland' due to its historical significance in the creation of the Old Swiss Confederacy. Through the artwork, Hodler offers a visual ode to the land of his birth and synthesizes his personal feelings of national identity and the existential human condition.
"Uri" reflects Hodler's stylistic evolution, where he gradually moved away from his early Realist paintings towards a more Symbolist approach. With its rhythmic compositions, it anticipates Hodler's subsequent ‘Parallelism’ style that he developed in the early 20th century.
The original artwork currently resides in the Kunstmuseum in Bern, testimony to Hodler’s contribution to Swiss art. As with much of Hodler's work, "Uri" underscores his ability to deliver an emotional resonance and a powerful sense of place through his precisely observed and passionately interpreted landscapes.
