Marshal Michel Ney is a 19th-century painting by French artist Eugène Bataille. Often associated with the lettrist and Dada movements, Bataille is remarkable for his satirical take on existing work. Previously, Marshal Michel Ney was an existing photograph by Nadar, which Bataille altered in 1887 to create a spoof image in the tradition of caricature, a popular medium in the 19th century. In this altered image, Ney, who was a military commander during the French Revolutionary Wars and under Napoleon, appears to hold a red flag, an iconography associated with the Paris Commune, a radical socialist and revolutionary government that ruled Paris from March to May 1871. With the imposition of the red flag, Bataille intended to introduce a layer of socio-political commentary, playfully altering the portrait's subject to appear as if Ney was a supporter of the rebellious Commune movement. This work exists as a critical exploration of the nature of representation and the potential of images to be altered and imbued with new meaning.
