Painting Description
The Griffoni Polyptych, a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, was created by the renowned painter Ercole de' Roberti. Born in Ferrara around 1451, Roberti was a prominent figure in the Ferrarese school of painting, known for his vivid color palette, expressive figures, and intricate compositions. The Griffoni Polyptych, originally commissioned for the Griffoni Chapel in the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna, is one of his most celebrated works.
The polyptych, which dates back to the late 15th century, was a large altarpiece consisting of multiple panels. It was commissioned by Floriano Griffoni, a canon of the Basilica, and was intended to serve as a devotional piece that would inspire the faithful through its depiction of various saints and religious scenes. The central panel of the polyptych featured St. Vincent Ferrer, a Dominican preacher and missionary, flanked by other saints, including St. Michael the Archangel, who is depicted in a dynamic and powerful stance, symbolizing his role as the leader of the heavenly armies.
Ercole de' Roberti's depiction of St. Michael is particularly noteworthy for its dramatic intensity and meticulous attention to detail. The archangel is shown in full armor, wielding a sword and shield, with a fierce expression that conveys his determination and divine authority. The background of the panel is richly decorated with gold leaf and intricate patterns, highlighting Roberti's skill in creating visually stunning and spiritually uplifting works of art.
Unfortunately, the Griffoni Polyptych was dismantled in the 18th century, and its panels were dispersed to various collections around the world. Today, the surviving panels can be found in museums such as the National Gallery in London, the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, and the Vatican Museums. Despite its fragmentation, the Griffoni Polyptych remains a testament to Ercole de' Roberti's artistic genius and his contribution to the Renaissance art movement.
