Painting Description
The "Griffoni Polyptych: St Jerome" is a painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Ercole de' Roberti. This artwork is part of the larger Griffoni Polyptych, originally created for the Griffoni Chapel in the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna. The polyptych was commissioned by Floriano Griffoni, a member of a prominent Bolognese family, in the late 15th century. Ercole de' Roberti, known for his expressive style and vibrant use of color, contributed several panels to this altarpiece.
The depiction of St Jerome is one of the notable panels attributed to de' Roberti. St Jerome, a revered scholar and translator of the Bible into Latin (the Vulgate), is often depicted in art as a cardinal or a hermit. In this painting, de' Roberti captures the saint's scholarly nature and ascetic lifestyle, often including symbolic elements such as a lion, a cardinal's hat, or a skull, which are traditional attributes associated with St Jerome.
Ercole de' Roberti's work is characterized by its emotional intensity and detailed rendering, which can be seen in the intricate depiction of textures and the expressive facial features of the saint. The use of color and light in the painting reflects the artist's mastery in creating depth and realism, contributing to the overall spiritual and contemplative atmosphere of the piece.
Unfortunately, the Griffoni Polyptych was dismantled in the 18th century, and its panels were dispersed across various collections. As a result, the "St Jerome" panel, along with others, is now housed in different museums. This dispersal has made it challenging to view the polyptych in its entirety, but efforts have been made to digitally reconstruct the altarpiece for educational and scholarly purposes.
Ercole de' Roberti's contribution to the Griffoni Polyptych remains a significant example of his artistic prowess and the rich cultural heritage of the Italian Renaissance.
