Painting Description
"The Story of Nastagio degli Onesti" by Ercole de' Roberti is a series of four tempera paintings on wood panels, created around 1483. These works are based on the eighth tale of the fifth day from Giovanni Boccaccio's "The Decameron," a collection of novellas written in the 14th century. The narrative follows the young nobleman Nastagio degli Onesti, who, after being rejected by his beloved, witnesses a supernatural hunt in the forest. This vision ultimately leads to a dramatic change in his fortunes.
Ercole de' Roberti, an Italian Renaissance painter from Ferrara, was known for his expressive style and innovative compositions. His interpretation of Boccaccio's tale is notable for its vivid storytelling and emotional intensity. The series was commissioned by the Pucci family of Florence, likely as a wedding gift, reflecting the Renaissance tradition of using art to convey moral and social messages.
The first panel depicts Nastagio encountering the ghostly hunt, where a knight pursues a naked woman with his hounds. The second panel shows Nastagio's realization that the knight and the woman are doomed to repeat this chase eternally as punishment for their earthly sins. In the third panel, Nastagio invites his beloved and her family to witness the hunt, hoping to persuade her to marry him. The final panel concludes with the couple's wedding, as the terrifying vision convinces the woman to accept Nastagio's proposal.
De' Roberti's work is characterized by its dynamic composition, rich color palette, and meticulous attention to detail. The series not only illustrates a popular literary theme but also serves as a testament to the artist's skill in capturing human emotion and drama. Today, these panels are housed in the Prado Museum in Madrid, where they continue to be admired for their artistic and historical significance.
