Painting Description
Erasmus II Quellin, also known as Erasmus Quellinus the Younger (1607–1678), was a prominent Flemish Baroque painter and draughtsman. Born in Antwerp, he was the son of Erasmus Quellinus the Elder, a sculptor, and the brother of Artus Quellinus, a renowned sculptor as well. Quellin the Younger was a pupil of the eminent Peter Paul Rubens, whose influence is evident in his work. He became a master in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1633 and later married Cornelia Teniers, the sister of David Teniers the Younger, another notable painter of the time.
Quellin's oeuvre is characterized by its classical themes, meticulous attention to detail, and dynamic compositions. He was particularly known for his history paintings, portraits, and allegorical scenes. His works often depicted mythological and biblical subjects, rendered with a dramatic flair and a rich color palette that echoed the grandeur of Rubens' style. Quellin's ability to convey complex narratives through expressive figures and intricate settings made him a sought-after artist in his era.
In addition to his paintings, Quellin was also an accomplished draughtsman. His drawings were highly regarded for their precision and elegance, often serving as preparatory studies for his larger works. His collaboration with other artists, including his brother Artus and the engraver Cornelis Bloemaert, further expanded his influence and reach within the artistic community.
Quellin's legacy is preserved in numerous collections and museums, where his contributions to the Baroque movement continue to be celebrated. His works not only reflect the artistic trends of his time but also offer insight into the cultural and intellectual currents of 17th-century Flanders.
