Painting Description
Dr. Bartolo is a character from the opera "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" (The Barber of Seville), which is not by Émile Antoine Bayard but by Gioachino Rossini, with a libretto by Cesare Sterbini. The opera premiered on February 20, 1816, at the Teatro Argentina in Rome. It is based on Pierre Beaumarchais's French comedy "Le Barbier de Séville" (1775). Dr. Bartolo is a central figure in this opera buffa (comic opera), serving as the guardian and would-be suitor of the heroine, Rosina. As a bass or baritone role, Dr. Bartolo is portrayed as a cunning, somewhat buffoonish older man who is determined to marry Rosina for her fortune. However, his plans are thwarted by the clever and resourceful barber Figaro, who helps the young Count Almaviva win Rosina's love and elope with her. Dr. Bartolo's character is essential to the opera's comedic elements, often finding himself the target of pranks and schemes devised by Figaro and Almaviva. Despite his initial portrayal as an antagonist, Dr. Bartolo's character is more comically misguided than truly villainous, contributing to the light-hearted and humorous tone that characterizes "The Barber of Seville." This opera remains one of Rossini's most popular works, celebrated for its witty libretto, engaging characters, and memorable melodies.
