Painting Description
"Absinthe, plate from 'Herbarium Blackwellianum'" is an illustration by Elizabeth Blackwell, a notable figure in botanical art and one of the first women to publish a book of this nature. The plate is part of her comprehensive work, "A Curious Herbal," which was later renamed "Herbarium Blackwellianum" in subsequent editions. Published between 1737 and 1739, the herbal contains 500 plates of medicinal plants and was intended to serve as a reference for physicians and apothecaries.
The illustration of Absinthe, specifically, depicts the plant Artemisia absinthium, commonly known as wormwood, which was used historically for its medicinal properties and is famously associated with the alcoholic beverage absinthe. Blackwell's work is characterized by its accuracy and detail, which was crucial for the identification and use of the plants in medical practice. Each plate in "Herbarium Blackwellianum" was engraved and hand-colored by Blackwell herself, making it not only a significant scientific record but also a work of art.
Elizabeth Blackwell undertook this ambitious project to secure the release of her husband from debtor's prison. The herbal was well-received and earned the approval of the Royal College of Physicians. It stands as a testament to her skill and dedication as an artist and an entrepreneur in a time when it was rare for a woman to succeed in such endeavors. The "Absinthe" plate, along with the rest of the collection, remains an important piece of botanical and medical history, reflecting the intersection of art, science, and gender in the 18th century.
