Painting Description
"Portrait of Marie Antoinette" is an 18th-century painting French artist Élisabethée-Lebrun. The artist, who was Marie Antoinette's official portraitist, created many iconic representations of the French Queen, with this one being one of her most renowned works.
The painting is a life-size work in oil on canvas, executed in 1783. It depicts the Queen in a comfortable, casual pose, dressed in a simple white muslin chemise dress, a radical departure from the formal, opulent attire typically seen in royal portraiture of the time. It was intended to present Marie Antoinette as a motherly figure, in an approachable and sympathetic light, at a time when her popularity was waning.
The painting, however, was met with scandal and disapproval. The informal attire, likened to lingerie, was seen as inappropriate for a queen, causing outrage and criticism. In response, another portrait, featuring the queen in a more traditional, regal gown, was hastily painted and exhibited instead.
Vigée-Lebrun's style is characterized by a mix of traditional portraiture techniques and a more modern, informal approach to subject matter, which is clearly reflected in the "Portrait of Marie Antoinette". The casual, pastoral setting and picturesque landscape background are evocative of the Rococo style and illustrate the Queen's known fondness for nature and a simple, rural life, in contrast to the opulence of the royal court.
Despite the contemporary scandal, today the artwork is seen as a hallmark of Vigée-Lebrun's body of work and an interesting commentary on the life and times of Marie Antoinette. The painting is part of the permanent collection at the Musée National des Châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon.
