Painting Description
Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern (8 November 1715 – 13 January 1797) was a German noblewoman and the Queen consort of Prussia as the wife of King Frederick the Great. Born into the House of Welf, she was the daughter of Duke Ferdinand Albert II of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel and Duchess Antoinette of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Elisabeth Christine's marriage to Frederick the Great was arranged as part of a political alliance between the Hohenzollern and Welf dynasties, and the couple wed on 12 June 1733.
Despite their marriage, Elisabeth Christine and Frederick the Great led largely separate lives. Frederick, who was more interested in military and state affairs, spent most of his time away from the court, while Elisabeth Christine resided primarily at Schönhausen Palace and later at the Monbijou Palace in Berlin. Their relationship was marked by mutual respect but lacked personal affection, and they had no children.
Elisabeth Christine was known for her piety, modesty, and dedication to charitable works. She was a patron of the arts and took a particular interest in music and literature, fostering a cultural environment at her residences. Her court became a center for intellectual and artistic activities, attracting various artists, musicians, and writers of the time.
Throughout her life, Elisabeth Christine maintained a low profile, avoiding political involvement and focusing on her personal interests and social duties. Her legacy is often overshadowed by the prominence of her husband, Frederick the Great, but she remains a significant historical figure in her own right due to her contributions to the cultural and social life of Prussia during the 18th century.
Elisabeth Christine passed away on 13 January 1797, having outlived her husband by more than a decade. She was buried in the Berlin Cathedral, where her tomb remains a testament to her enduring presence in Prussian history.
