Painting Description
The "Portrait of Johann Sebastian Bach" by Elias Gottlob Haussmann is one of the most iconic and widely recognized portraits of the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach, who is considered one of the greatest composers in the history of Western classical music. Painted in 1748, this oil-on-canvas portrait is the most famous and arguably the most accurate visual representation of Bach that exists. It is one of only two portraits for which Bach is known to have sat during his lifetime, the other being an earlier version by the same artist from 1746.
Elias Gottlob Haussmann (1695–1774) was a German painter who served as the court painter in Leipzig, where Bach spent a significant portion of his career. The 1748 portrait shows Bach at the age of 61, two years before his death in 1750. In this half-length portrait, Bach is depicted with a stern yet contemplative expression, dressed in a formal coat with a white shirt and a flowing white wig, which was the fashion of the time. He holds a sheet of music, which contains a short score of his "Canon triplex a 6 Voc." from the "Musical Offering" (BWV 1079), a work dedicated to Frederick the Great of Prussia.
The portrait is notable for its attention to detail and the skillful rendering of textures, such as the fabric of Bach's clothing and the softness of his wig. Haussmann's use of lighting emphasizes the composer's face, drawing attention to his thoughtful gaze and the intensity of his character.
This portrait has become emblematic of Bach's legacy and is often used in media and publications related to the composer. The original painting is housed in the Bach Archive in Leipzig, Germany, and has been subject to various conservation efforts to preserve it for future generations. Its significance lies not only in its artistic merit but also in its historical value, providing a tangible connection to one of the most influential figures in music history.
