Painting Description
"Parrot Plate 16" is a notable illustration by the English artist, illustrator, musician, author, and poet Edward Lear (1812–1888), renowned for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose and especially for his limericks, a form he popularized. This particular plate is part of Lear's celebrated collection of parrot illustrations, which were created during the early part of his career when he was primarily working as an ornithological draughtsman.
Lear's parrot illustrations were commissioned by the Zoological Society of London and were initially intended to be part of a publication on living Psittacidae, or parrots. The series, titled "Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots," was published in 1832 and consisted of 42 lithographic prints, with Lear having drawn from live birds at the gardens of the Zoological Society. "Parrot Plate 16" is one of these artworks and exemplifies Lear's meticulous attention to detail, vibrant use of color, and ability to capture the character and texture of the birds' plumage.
The significance of Lear's work on parrots lies not only in its artistic merit but also in its contribution to the field of ornithology. At the time, his illustrations were considered to be some of the most accurate and lifelike representations of these birds, contributing valuable visual knowledge to the scientific community. Lear's parrot plates are also an early example of his artistic talent, predating his fame as a writer of nonsense verse.
"Parrot Plate 16," like the other plates in the series, is highly sought after by collectors and is appreciated by both art enthusiasts and ornithologists for its historical and aesthetic value. The entire collection is an important part of Lear's oeuvre, showcasing his early development as an artist and his profound understanding of avian subjects.
