Painting Description
"Peaceable Kingdom" is a series of paintings by Edward Hicks (1780–1849), a Quaker minister, folk artist, and American painter. Created over several decades, from the 1820s until Hicks's death in 1849, this series comprises over 60 versions, each depicting a unique vision of the biblical prophecy from Isaiah 11:6–8. This prophecy foretells a harmonious kingdom where predators and prey live together in peace, led by a child. Hicks's renditions of "Peaceable Kingdom" are celebrated for their intricate symbolism, blending religious themes with political commentary, particularly reflecting on the Quaker ideal of pacifism and the artist's hope for harmony and reconciliation in the post-Revolutionary United States.
Edward Hicks used this motif not only to express his spiritual beliefs but also to comment on the societal issues of his time, including the tensions between European settlers and Native Americans, and the challenges of unity within the Quaker community. The paintings typically feature a variety of animals—lions, lambs, leopards, and cows—gathered in a tranquil setting, often with children among them, and sometimes including scenes of William Penn's treaty with the Native Americans, symbolizing the potential for peace and coexistence.
The "Peaceable Kingdom" series showcases Hicks's folk art style, characterized by its lack of formal training, vivid imagery, and the use of bright, flat colors. Despite the variations among the paintings, they all share a common theme of hope and redemption, reflecting Hicks's deep religious convictions and his desire for a more peaceful world. Today, these works are considered significant contributions to American folk art and are held in various public and private collections, admired for their beauty, as well as their rich layers of meaning and historical context.
