Painting Description
''Peaceable Kingdom'' is a series of paintings by American folk artist Edward Hicks (1780–1849), which depict a menagerie of animals coexisting in harmony, as described in the biblical prophecy of Isaiah 11:6–8. Hicks, a Quaker minister, and painter, created approximately 62 versions of this theme over the course of his life, each varying in composition and detail but all sharing the central message of peace and pacifism, which was fundamental to his religious convictions.
The paintings typically feature a variety of animals, both predators and prey, lying together peacefully, often with a group of small children among them. In the background, there is usually a scene depicting William Penn's treaty with the Native Americans, which is an event that symbolized Quaker ideals of equality, justice, and peace. This juxtaposition serves to underscore the possibility of peaceful coexistence between all creatures and peoples, a cornerstone of Hicks' Quaker beliefs.
The ''Peaceable Kingdom'' paintings are considered iconic works of American folk art and are notable for their naive style and rich symbolism. The series reflects Hicks' personal struggles with his faith, his adherence to Quaker pacifism, and his views on the societal issues of his time. Today, the paintings are held in various museums and private collections and continue to be studied for their artistic, cultural, and religious significance. They not only represent Hicks' most famous work but also serve as a visual representation of early American religious and moral thought.
