Painting Description
"Peaceable Kingdom" is a series of paintings by Edward Hicks (1780–1849), a Quaker minister, farmer, and self-taught artist from Pennsylvania, United States. Created between 1820 and 1849, the series includes over 60 versions, each depicting a unique vision of the biblical prophecy from Isaiah 11:6–8, which foretells a harmonious kingdom where predatory animals live peacefully with their prey and a child leads them. This theme resonated deeply with Hicks's Quaker beliefs in pacifism and the possibility of achieving peace on Earth.
The paintings typically feature a variety of animals, both wild and domestic, coexisting in harmony alongside human figures, including children. Central to many compositions is the image of a lion lying down with a lamb, symbolizing the peace and unity that Hicks envisioned for humanity. The backgrounds often depict lush landscapes, sometimes including scenes of William Penn's treaty with the Native Americans, which Hicks used to parallel the peaceable kingdom theme with a historical event embodying Quaker ideals of equality and justice.
"Peaceable Kingdom" reflects Hicks's struggle with the Quaker doctrine of inner light, a belief in the presence of God within every individual, which led him to view his art as a form of preaching. Through these works, he expressed his hope for a world where the spiritual and moral values of Quakerism could bring about universal peace and harmony. The series is celebrated not only for its rich religious symbolism but also for its contribution to American folk art, showcasing Hicks's distinctive style that combines realism with a naive simplicity.
Today, "Peaceable Kingdom" paintings are held in various public and private collections, admired for their serene beauty and profound message. They serve as a testament to Edward Hicks's artistic legacy and his enduring vision of a world transformed by peace and goodwill.
