Painting Description
"The Sick Child" is a series of six paintings and numerous lithographs, drypoints, and etchings completed by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch between 1885 and 1926. The series is regarded as one of the most significant works realized by Munch, outside of his renowned piece, "The Scream."
The first painting in the sequence was initiated in 1885 and concluded in 1886. It depicts Munch's elder sister, Johanne Sophie, who died from tuberculosis when she was just 15 years old and Munch himself was 14. The painting takes a dramatic subject and is rendered in an equally emotional style, dramatizing the impact of the young girl's illness on her family. Munch utilized an impressionistic brushwork style in the composition, opting for a minimal color palette with shades of red and grey.
Subsequent renditions of the theme took on a broader interpretation of the subject, reflecting the anguish of illness and mortality – themes that resonated deeply with Munch due to his own repeated bouts of sickness and the loss of family members to disease. With each variant, Munch's expressionist style further embraced his personal experiences and emotions with regards to the subject matter, underlining his metaphorical interpretation of the theme.
The earliest versions of "The Sick Child" were criticized for their radical departure from traditional standards of composition and technique. However, the series has since been recognized by art historians as a seminal moment in Munch's development towards a symbolic, emotional realism. These path-breaking works helped Munch in expressing profound psychological impact, paving the way for his use of color, form, and symbolic content in his later career, evidenced in his acclaimed piece, "The Scream."
Today, examples from "The Sick Child" series belong to the collections of major international art institutions, including the Tate Modern in London and the Munch Museum in Oslo, acknowledging its status as a major piece of Western art history.
