Painting Description
''Luncheon on the Grass'' (''Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe'') is a seminal painting by French artist Édouard Manet, completed in 1863. It is considered one of the pivotal works in the history of art for its radical treatment of subject matter and its departure from the traditional techniques and perspectives of the time. The painting depicts a nude woman casually lunching with two fully dressed men in a rural setting, an unconventional scene that flouted the norms of the Parisian salon and sparked public controversy for its apparent disregard for the standards of classical nude depictions in Western art.
The composition of ''Luncheon on the Grass'' was inspired by the pastoral scenes of earlier artists, such as Titian and Giorgione, and it may reference the Concert Champêtre, which has been attributed to both artists. However, Manet's approach was starkly modern. His use of a contemporary scene with recognizable figures from the Parisian bohemia, including his brother Gustave Manet and future brother-in-law, Ferdinand Leenhoff, as the clothed men, and Victorine Meurent, his favorite model, as the nude woman, was a bold move that challenged the academic conventions of the time.
The painting's flatness, with a disregard for perspective and the use of broad, simple brushstrokes, was a precursor to the Impressionist movement and influenced the development of modern art. The juxtaposition of light and dark, the treatment of the nude figure, and the direct gaze of the woman at the viewer were all aspects that provoked discussion and debate. ''Luncheon on the Grass'' was rejected by the Paris Salon but exhibited at the Salon des Refusés in 1863, an alternative salon established by Emperor Napoleon III where works rejected by the official salon could be displayed.
Today, ''Luncheon on the Grass'' is housed in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and remains an iconic work of 19th-century art, celebrated for its avant-garde approach and its significant role in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. Manet's work continues to be studied and admired for its bold commentary on the social mores of the time and its lasting impact on the direction of modern art.
