Painting Description
"Young 14-Year-Old Dancer" (French: "La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans") is a sculpture by Edgar Degas, originally sculpted in wax circa 1881 and later cast in bronze. It is one of Degas's most iconic works and represents his profound interest in the world of ballet, which was a recurring theme in his oeuvre. The sculpture stands out in the history of art for its vivid realism and the mixed media approach, as Degas adorned the figure with a real bodice, tutu, and ballet slippers, and topped it with a wig of real hair, making it a unique piece among his contemporaries' more traditional sculptures.
The subject of the sculpture is a young student of the Paris Opéra Ballet dance school, believed to be Marie van Goethem. The original wax sculpture was exhibited at the Sixth Impressionist Exhibition in 1881, where it received mixed reviews, with some critics deriding its unusual realism and others praising its dynamic and living quality. After Degas's death, more than two dozen bronze casts were made from the original wax model by the Hébrard foundry under the supervision of Degas's heirs.
The "Young 14-Year-Old Dancer" is significant not only for its technical mastery and the insight it provides into the Parisian ballet culture of the late 19th century but also for the way it bridges the gap between traditional sculpture and the avant-garde approach of the Impressionists. Today, the various casts of the sculpture can be found in museums around the world, where they continue to captivate audiences with their delicate portrayal of youthful grace and the burdens of the life of a dancer.
