Painting Description
''Little Dancer of Fourteen Years'' (French: ''La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans'') is a sculpture by Edgar Degas, originally sculpted in wax circa 1880-1881. It is one of Degas's most iconic works and is notable for its departure from traditional sculpture materials and its vivid portrayal of human expression. The sculpture depicts a young student of the Paris Opera Ballet dance school, a "petite rat" as the young dancers were known, named Marie van Goethem.
The original wax sculpture was exhibited at the Sixth Impressionist Exhibition in 1881, where it received mixed reviews, with some critics admiring its modernity and others deriding its departure from classical forms. Degas dressed the sculpture in a real bodice, tutu, and ballet slippers, and topped it with a wig of real hair, all of which contributed to its lifelike presence. The figure stands in a relaxed, naturalistic pose, which contrasts sharply with the more rigid and idealized forms of traditional ballet portraiture.
After Degas's death in 1917, more than 150 pieces of wax sculptures were found in his studio, many in disrepair. The ''Little Dancer'' was in a particularly fragile state. His heirs, wanting to preserve his work and create value from it, made the decision to cast his sculptures in bronze. The ''Little Dancer'' was cast in bronze posthumously, with the supervision of foundry owner Adrien-Aurélien Hébrard, and the first bronzes were made in 1922. The casting process preserved the original work and allowed for the sculpture to be exhibited and appreciated by future generations.
Today, bronze casts of the ''Little Dancer'' are held in museums around the world, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The sculpture continues to be a subject of study and admiration, representing a significant moment in the evolution of modern art and reflecting Degas's innovative approach to capturing the essence of human movement and form.
