Painting Description
'''Rhinoceros (No. 76)''' is a woodcut print by the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer, created in 1515. The image is based on a written description and brief sketch by an unknown artist of an Indian rhinoceros that had arrived in Lisbon earlier that year. Dürer never saw the actual rhinoceros, which was the first living example seen in Europe since Roman times. Despite its inaccuracies, Dürer's woodcut became very popular in Europe and was copied many times in the following three centuries.
The woodcut depicts the rhinoceros with hard, patterned plates that cover its body like armor, including a small twisted horn on its back, which is not a feature of the animal in reality. The print also shows the animal with a soft, curving belly and leg scales, creating a somewhat fantastical creature. Dürer's interpretation reflects the blend of observation and myth that was common in representations of exotic animals during the Renaissance.
Dürer's Rhinoceros was part of his broader interest in the natural world, which he often incorporated into his art. The woodcut was widely distributed and influential in establishing the visual representation of a rhinoceros in Western society, despite its inaccuracies. It is an iconic example of the power of visual imagery in the absence of direct observation and a testament to Dürer's skill as an artist and his ability to capture the imagination of his contemporaries. The Rhinoceros (No. 76) remains one of Dürer's most famous and enduring works, and it is a significant piece in the history of zoological illustration.
