Painting Description
Maestà, also known as Maestà of Duccio, is an iconic work of Italian artist Duccio di Buoninsegna, painted between 1308 and 1311. This monumental altarpiece, commissioned by the city of Siena, is not only one of the significant works of Duccio but also represents a monumental point of departure in the history of Italian and European painting.
The Maestà consists of several individual paintings which comprise a complex iconographic whole. The main panel displays the Virgin Mary seated on a high-backed throne, holding the Christ Child, surrounded by a host of attending saints and angels. On the reverse side, there are 26 smaller scenes tiered in rows depicting stories from the Life of Christ and the Life of the Virgin. Many of these scenes, like the Betrayal of Jesus, Crucifixion, and Deposition, are noted for introducing new degrees of narrative and spatial complexity to Italian painting.
Created for the high altar of Siena cathedral, the Maestà is representative of Duccio’s art as it melds the Byzantine art familiar in Italy at the time with the burgeoning aesthetics of the Early Renaissance. With its innovative approach to naturalistic representation, the spatial illusion, and emotional expressivity, the Maestà sets the stage for advancements to come in the Tuscan school of painting. Today, many panels of the Maestà reside in various museums worldwide, although a significant portion remains in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Siena.
With its grandeur, detail, and influence, Maestà (1308-11) is a pivotal work that marked a turning point in the progression of European art towards a greater naturalism and understanding of the human figure, setting the stage for the developments of the Renaissance period.
