Painting Description
"Prophet with Scroll", otherwise commonly known as "Habakkuk", is one of the renowned works of the great Italian sculptor Donatello (1386–1466). First created 1427-35, it forms part of the Campanile (Bell tower) sculptures commissioned by the cathedral of Florence, Santa Maria del Fiore.
Carved out of marble, this standing figure depicts one of the Old prophets, guessed by most scholars to be Habakkuk due to the presence of a scroll which is generally considered symbolic of his writings. The figure, standing around 6.5 feet in height, exhibits an exaggerated contrapposto pose, a hallmark of Donatello's style and his understanding of classical Greek and Roman sculpting techniques, which gives the statue a sense of dramatic motion.
Detailing gestures and facial expressions to convey intense emotion and human authenticity, Donatello's work is remarkable for its vivid portrayal of the character's deep-seated anxiety and anguish. Distinctive characteristics such as the intricate carving of the prophets' garments, the furrowed brow, and the open mouth as if in mid-speech, reveal the emotional depth and a sense of realism that signify the early Florentine Renaissance style.
"Prophet with Scroll" can be located alongside other prophets and biblical figures in the ground floor niches of the Bell Tower, a testament to Donatello's contribution to the evolution of European sculpture during the early renaissance period.
