Painting Description
"Evangelist John" is a renowned sculpture created by the Italian artist Donatello, one of the foremost sculptors of the early Renaissance. This work, completed in the first half of the 15th century, is part of a series of four evangelist statues that were commissioned for the external niches of the campanile of Florence Cathedral, also known as Giotto's Campanile. Donatello's depiction of John the Evangelist, traditionally identified as the author of the fourth Gospel in the New Testament, is a testament to the artist's mastery of human form and his innovative approach to conveying psychological depth and individual character in sculpture.
The statue of Evangelist John stands as a significant example of the transition from the Gothic style to the Renaissance. Donatello's work is characterized by a naturalistic treatment of the figure, a departure from the more rigid and stylized representations of the medieval period. The sculpture shows John as a pensive and introspective figure, with a sense of inner life that was groundbreaking for its time. The evangelist is portrayed seated, with a book in his left hand, symbolizing his role as a writer of the Gospel, and his right hand raised in a gesture that suggests teaching or oration.
The work's precise date of completion is uncertain, but it is generally dated to the 1410s. "Evangelist John" is sculpted in marble, a medium that Donatello worked with extensively during his early career before turning to bronze and other materials in later works. The statue's size and the technical skill evident in its execution are indicative of the significant commissions Donatello received and his prominent status in the Florentine art community.
Today, "Evangelist John" is no longer in its original location on the campanile. Like the other evangelist statues, it has been moved to the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo (Museum of the Works of the Cathedral) in Florence to protect it from the elements and to be replaced by a replica on the campanile. The original work remains an important piece in the study of Renaissance art and Donatello's oeuvre, reflecting the artist's influence on the development of sculptural technique and the portrayal of human emotion and character.
