Painting Description
The Passion Altarpiece, also known as the Altarpiece of the Holy Sacrament, is a renowned Early Netherlandish painting created by Dieric Bouts the Elder around 1455. This central panel of a triptych is housed in St. Peter's Church, Leuven, Belgium, and is celebrated for its devotional impact and its pioneering use of continuous narrative within a single panel.
The central panel of the Passion Altarpiece is a complex and emotionally charged depiction of the Last Supper, a subject matter that was highly significant for its original location above the chapel of the Confraternity of the Holy Sacrament. Bouts' work is notable for its meticulous attention to detail and its use of a single-point perspective, a relatively new technique at the time, which draws the viewer's eye towards the vanishing point behind Christ's head, emphasizing his significance.
Measuring approximately 180 cm in height and 140 cm in width, the central panel is flanked by four wings that, when closed, display the Annunciation. When opened, the inner wings reveal scenes from the life of Christ, specifically the events leading up to and following the Last Supper, thus providing a visual narrative of the Passion.
Bouts' use of oil paint allows for a vivid portrayal of textures and colors, and his representation of light imparts a sense of realism and solemnity to the scene. The figures are rendered with a quiet dignity and a humanism that is characteristic of the Northern Renaissance. The altarpiece's influence is evident in the works of later Flemish painters, and it remains an important example of Northern Renaissance art, reflecting the period's religious devotion, artistic innovation, and the burgeoning interest in perspective and naturalism.
