Painting Description
"Las Meninas" (Spanish for "The Maids of Honour") is a 1656 painting by Diego Velázquez, the leading artist of the Spanish Golden Age. It was painted in the mature stage of his career, and it is housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain, since 1819. The work's complex and enigmatic composition raises questions about reality and illusion, and creates an uncertain relationship between the viewer and the figures depicted.
The painting shows a large room in the Royal Alcazar of Madrid during the reign of King Philip IV of Spain, and presents several figures, most identifiable from the Spanish court, captured, according to some interpretations, in a particular moment as they visit the painter's studio. Velázquez himself is portrayed at work on a large canvas, the subject of which is obscured from the viewer. In the center of the painting stands Infanta Margaret Theresa, attended by two maids of honour, two dwarfs, a dog, a bodyguard, a chamberlain, and a chaperone peeking from behind a curtain. In the background, a mirror reflects the upper bodies of the king and queen.
"Las Meninas" has been recognized as one of the most important paintings in Western art history. It has been widely analyzed and interpreted in its execution, composition, and interpretation, and has influenced many notable artists and artworks. The painting's peculiar aesthetic and thematic complexity make it an enduring subject for scholarly study in art history.
