Painting Description
"A Venus at Her Mirror" (also known as "The Rokeby Venus") is a celebrated painting by the Spanish artist Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez, who is widely regarded as one of the most important painters of the Spanish Golden Age. Created between 1647 and 1651, this work is Velázquez's only surviving nude and one of the few female nudes in the artistic tradition of 17th-century Spain, where the depiction of the naked body was subject to strict religious censorship.
The painting depicts Venus, the Roman goddess of love, lying on a bed in a sensuous pose, her back turned towards the viewer. She gazes into a mirror held by her son Cupid, who is rendered without wings in this interpretation, a detail that distinguishes the work from other mythological portrayals of the period. The mirror, rather than reflecting Venus's face, presents a blurred and dreamy visage, which has been the subject of much scholarly interpretation.
Measuring 122.5 cm × 177 cm (48.2 in × 69.7 in), the oil-on-canvas work is renowned for its soft modeling of form and the delicate treatment of light and shade, which give the painting a velvety texture and a sense of ethereal beauty. The composition's elegant simplicity and the psychological depth attributed to the figures are characteristic of Velázquez's mature style.
"The Rokeby Venus" has a complex provenance, having been owned by various European collectors before being acquired by the National Gallery, London, in 1906, where it remains on display. The painting's title refers to Rokeby Park in Yorkshire, where it was housed for much of the 19th century.
This masterpiece has been the subject of extensive art historical research and has inspired numerous interpretations and discussions, particularly regarding its place in the context of Velázquez's oeuvre and Spanish Baroque art. It has also been a focal point in discussions about the female form in art, the male gaze, and the intersection of beauty, eroticism, and morality in European painting. Notably, the work was attacked and severely damaged in 1914 by suffragette Mary Richardson, an act that brought the painting additional notoriety and sparked further debate about its cultural and historical significance.
