Born on December 20, 1700, in Paris, he was the son of Charles Auguste Ferriol, Comte d'Argental, and Marie-Angélique de Tencin. D'Argental is best known for his close friendship and extensive correspondence with the Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire, whom he supported and advised throughout his career.
