Painting Description
Die Nestrauber, also known as "The Nest Robbers," is a notable work by the Flemish painter David Vinckboons, created around 1600. This painting, executed in oil on wood (parqueted), measures 38 cm in height and 55 cm in width. The reverse side of the wooden panel bears the mark "LS" (ligatured), identifying the manufacturer of the wood panel as Lambrecht Steens, who was active in Antwerp around 1600.
The artwork has been authenticated by expert K. Goossens from Borgerhout. It has a documented provenance, having been previously part of the collection at Galerie Robert Finck in Brussels. Die Nestrauber exemplifies Vinckboons' skill in landscape and genre painting, capturing a vivid scene of figures engaged in the act of stealing from a bird's nest, set against a lush, detailed backdrop that reflects the artist’s keen observation of nature and human activity. This painting not only showcases Vinckboons' mastery in handling oil on wood but also provides insight into the cultural and environmental milieu of the early 17th century in the Flemish region.
