Painting Description
"The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, & Nubia" is a seminal collection of lithographs by Scottish painter David Roberts, first published between 1842 and 1849. This extensive work is renowned for its detailed and picturesque depictions of the Middle East and North Africa, regions that were relatively unknown to the Western world at the time. Roberts embarked on his journey to these lands in 1838, traveling extensively through Egypt, the Sinai Peninsula, the Levant, and parts of Arabia. His travels were meticulously documented through sketches and notes, which he later transformed into the lithographs that comprise this collection.
The publication consists of six volumes, containing a total of 247 lithographs. These images were produced by Louis Haghe, one of the leading lithographers of the time, who worked from Roberts' original sketches. The lithographs are accompanied by descriptive text written by the Reverend George Croly, providing historical and cultural context to the scenes depicted. The work is celebrated not only for its artistic merit but also for its documentary value, offering a visual record of many sites that have since undergone significant changes or have been lost to time.
Roberts' illustrations cover a wide array of subjects, including ancient ruins, bustling marketplaces, and serene landscapes. His attention to architectural detail and the human element in his compositions provides a vivid portrayal of 19th-century life in these regions. "The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, & Nubia" has been praised for its accuracy and artistic quality, making it a valuable resource for historians, archaeologists, and art enthusiasts alike. The collection remains a significant contribution to the visual documentation of the Middle East and continues to be a reference point for studies related to the region's history and culture.
