Painting Description
"Ruined Mosques in the Desert, west of the Citadel, Cairo" is a 19th-century lithograph by the Scottish artist David Roberts, which forms part of his larger work, "Egypt and Nubia, Vol.3." This lithograph is one of a series that resulted from Roberts' extensive travels through Egypt and the surrounding regions in 1838-1839. The series was published between 1842 and 1849 and became one of the most important visual records of the landscapes, architecture, and culture of the area during that period.
The image depicts the remnants of Islamic architecture set against the stark backdrop of the desert, located to the west of the historic Citadel of Cairo. The Citadel itself is a significant medieval Islamic fortification and a landmark of Cairo, commissioned by Salah al-Din (Saladin) in the 12th century. Roberts' work captures the contrast between the enduring grandeur of the Citadel and the decay of the once-splendid mosques, conveying a sense of both the passage of time and the enduring spirit of the place.
Roberts' artistic endeavor was not just a pictorial record but also an act of preservation through art, as many of the sites he depicted have since changed or been lost to time. His works are characterized by their attention to detail, vibrant color, and the interplay of light and shadow, which helped to romanticize and popularize Orientalist views of the Middle East in the Victorian era.
"Ruined Mosques in the Desert, west of the Citadel, Cairo" is significant not only for its aesthetic qualities but also for its historical value, providing insight into the state of Egyptian monuments in the 19th century. The lithographs from "Egypt and Nubia" were produced in collaboration with the skilled lithographer Louis Haghe, who was able to translate Roberts' detailed sketches and watercolors into the printed form, making them accessible to a wide audience in Europe and contributing to the period's burgeoning interest in Egyptology and the Near East.
