Painting Description
"Cairo" is a series of lithographs by the Scottish artist David Roberts (1796–1864), who is renowned for his detailed prints and paintings of Egypt and the Near East. These lithographs are part of a larger body of work that resulted from Roberts's extensive travels through the region from 1838 to 1839. The "Cairo" series captures the architectural and urban splendor of Egypt's capital during the early 19th century, offering a romanticized view of its streets, monuments, and daily life.
Roberts's work was groundbreaking for its time, as he was one of the first Western artists to travel so extensively through these regions and document their landscapes and culture. His depictions of Cairo are particularly notable for their attention to detail and the artist's efforts to convey the city's atmosphere. The lithographs were produced with the collaboration of the skilled lithographer Louis Haghe, to whom Roberts's original sketches were transferred. The series was published as part of "The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia," which appeared in six volumes from 1842 to 1849.
The "Cairo" lithographs were well-received in Europe, where there was a growing fascination with Orientalism and the exotic appeal of the East. They contributed significantly to the West's perception of the Middle East and remain important historical records of the architectural and cultural heritage of Cairo during a period of significant change. Today, these works are considered valuable for both their artistic merit and their documentary value, providing insight into the historical context of 19th-century Egypt. Roberts's "Cairo" series continues to be appreciated for its aesthetic beauty and as a testament to the artist's pioneering spirit in the field of travel art.
