Painting Description
Girlhood of Mary Virgin" is a painting by British artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti completed between 1848 and 1849. This pre-Raphaelite work, considered Rossetti's first significant painting, is presently housed in the Tate Gallery in London.
The painting depicts the Virgin Mary during her early years, undertaking religious studies under the guidance of her mother, Saint Anne. Mary is represented stringing a red thread around a thornless rose bush, symbolising her pure spirit and foreshadowing the Christ's Passion. Her father, Saint Joachim, is shown in the background, cultivating a vine that is symbolic of the ecclesiastical tradition from which Jesus would emerge.
The artist's sister, Christina Rossetti, a notable poet herself, served as the model for Mary. This choice underscores the intimate, family-oriented ethos which characterised the early Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, including Rossetti, William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, who aimed to produce sincere, moral and detailed art in contrast to the industrialized Victorian England.
Using luminous colors and intricate detailing, Rossetti presented an anti-academic posture that was characteristic of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His inclusion of symbolic imagery and narrative attention to the Bible and theological lore also underpinned the Brotherhood's principles, representing a reintroduction of spirituality into fine art and a reengagement with medieval aesthetic sensibilities.
"The Girlhood of Mary Virgin", along with Rossetti's broader oeuvre, formed the ideological and stylistic groundwork of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, extending its impact into literature, design, and cultural thought, and shaping the future of the Aesthetic Movement and Symbolist art.
