Painting Description
''Beata Beatrix'' is an oil on canvas painting by Pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti, completed in 1870. The painting is widely regarded as one of Rossetti's most significant works, serving as both a memorial and an idealized portrait of his deceased wife, Elizabeth Siddal, who died in 1862. The artwork is imbued with rich symbolism and reflects Rossetti's fascination with the Italian poet Dante Alighieri, particularly Dante's idealized love for Beatrice Portinari, as depicted in his masterpiece, the ''Divine Comedy''.
The painting portrays Siddal as Beatrice at the moment of her death, or "transfiguration," with her hands loosely clasped and her eyes half-closed in a state of serene acceptance. The setting is a stylized Florence, with the Ponte Vecchio visible in the background. A dove, often interpreted as a symbol of the Holy Spirit, is shown delivering a poppy to Beatrice, representing both the sleep of death and the opium that contributed to Siddal's demise. To the right of the composition, a figure representing Love holds a sundial, indicating the time has stopped at the moment of Beatrice's departure from the earthly realm.
Rossetti's ''Beata Beatrix'' is not only a personal tribute to his late wife but also an exploration of themes such as love, death, and transcendence, which are recurrent in his body of work. The painting's dreamlike quality and its blending of biographical elements with literary allusion exemplify the Pre-Raphaelite movement's commitment to complex narrative imagery and emotional depth. ''Beata Beatrix'' is held in the collection of the Tate Britain in London, and its enduring appeal is evidenced by its frequent discussion in scholarly works on Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
