Painting Description
Alexa Wilding was a prominent muse and model for the Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti during the latter half of the 19th century. Born Alice Wilding in 1847, she was discovered by Rossetti in 1865 while walking in the Strand in London. Struck by her striking beauty and distinctive features, Rossetti persuaded her to model for him, thus beginning a professional relationship that would last for many years and result in some of his most iconic works.
Wilding's serene and ethereal appearance perfectly embodied the Pre-Raphaelite ideal of beauty, characterized by a combination of classical features and a sense of otherworldly grace. She became one of Rossetti's most frequently depicted subjects, appearing in numerous paintings and drawings. Unlike some of Rossetti's other muses, such as Elizabeth Siddal or Jane Morris, Wilding's relationship with the artist remained strictly professional, and she did not become romantically involved with him.
Among the notable works featuring Alexa Wilding are "The Blessed Damozel" (1875-1878), "Monna Vanna" (1866), and "Astarte Syriaca" (1877). In these paintings, Wilding's visage is often idealized, serving as a canvas for Rossetti's exploration of themes such as beauty, mysticism, and romantic longing. Her image helped to define the aesthetic of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, which sought to revive the detail, color, and complexity of early Renaissance art.
Despite her significant role in Rossetti's oeuvre, relatively little is known about Wilding's personal life. She remained somewhat enigmatic, with few details about her life outside of her modeling career. Nevertheless, her contribution to the art world, particularly through her collaboration with Rossetti, has cemented her place in the history of 19th-century British art.
