Painting Description
The Well of Moses (French: Puits de Moïse) is a monumental sculpture recognized as one of the masterpieces of Burgundian Gothic art, created by the Dutch sculptor Claus Sluter (and continued by his nephew Claus de Werve) between 1395 and 1405. It is located at the former Chartreuse de Champmol, a Carthusian monastery in Dijon, France, which was founded by Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. The well, originally part of a larger Calvary group, was designed as a hexagonal stone base supporting a crucifix, surrounded by figures of prophets from the Old Testament.
The name "Well of Moses" refers to the structure's appearance as a fountain, though its primary function was spiritual and symbolic rather than utilitarian. The prophets depicted include Moses, David, Jeremiah, Zachariah, Daniel, and Isaiah, each holding scrolls or objects associated with their biblical narratives. These life-sized figures are notable for their naturalism and individualized facial expressions, which were groundbreaking for the period and signal a transition from the stylized forms of the Middle Ages to the more human-focused art of the Renaissance.
The crucifix that originally rose from the center of the well was destroyed during the French Revolution, but the base with the prophets remains. The Well of Moses is highly regarded for its expressive realism and the intricate detail of the sculptures' drapery and features. Sluter's work on this project marked a significant departure from the prevailing Gothic style of the time, influencing the development of sculpture in Northern Europe.
The Well of Moses is not only a testament to the artistic skill of Claus Sluter but also reflects the devotional and political ambitions of its patron, Philip the Bold. The ducal patronage of the arts during this period was instrumental in establishing the Chartreuse de Champmol as a center of artistic innovation. Today, the Well of Moses is considered an important cultural and historical monument, offering insight into the religious and artistic sensibilities of late 14th-century France.
