Painting Description
The Well of Moses, also known as the "Moses Fountain," is a monumental sculpture created by the Dutch artist Claus Sluter (c. 1340s–1405/06) and his workshop. Located at the former Chartreuse de Champmol, a Carthusian monastery in Dijon, France, the work was commissioned by Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. It was intended to serve as a base for a crucifix and a Calvary group, functioning as both a public fountain and a grand sculptural representation of biblical prophets, which included figures of Daniel and Isaiah among others.
Completed between 1395 and 1405, the Well of Moses is a seminal piece of late Gothic art, marking a significant departure from the more rigid and stylized forms of the earlier Middle Ages towards a greater naturalism and individual character in the figures, which would later flourish in the Renaissance. The hexagonal base of the fountain is adorned with life-sized figures of six prophets from the Old Testament, each holding a scroll or a book inscribed with text from their prophecies, which were believed to prefigure the coming of Christ.
The figures of Daniel and Isaiah are particularly noted for their detailed carving and the sense of personality Sluter has imparted to them. Daniel is depicted as a youthful figure, traditionally interpreted as a wise and visionary prophet, while Isaiah is shown as an older, bearded man, often associated with foretelling the Virgin Birth. The sculptures are remarkable for their realism and the intricate drapery of the clothing, as well as the expressive faces that convey a sense of contemplation and prophetic insight.
The Well of Moses was originally painted and gilded, but much of the polychromy has been lost over time. Despite this, the remaining sculpture provides a rare and valuable insight into the transition from medieval to early modern European art. The work is considered one of Claus Sluter's masterpieces and holds an important place in the history of Western sculpture for its innovative approach to representing figures with a heightened sense of individuality and emotional depth.
