Painting Description
The Well of Moses, also known as the "Moses Fountain," is a monumental sculpture created by the Dutch artist Claus Sluter (1340s–1405/06) and his workshop. Located at the former Chartreuse de Champmol, a Carthusian monastery in Dijon, France, the work was commissioned by Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. The sculpture, which is a significant example of Burgundian art, was originally part of a larger Calvary group that included a crucifixion scene, now lost, that stood atop the well structure. The work was created between 1395 and 1406.
The Well of Moses is particularly renowned for its six life-sized prophets holding scrolls or books, which are carved around the base of the crucifixion pillar. Among these figures are the prophets David and Jeremiah, each depicted with remarkable individuality and expressive detail that reflects the innovative realism of Northern European sculpture at the end of the 14th century. David, the second king of the United Kingdom of Israel and Judah, is traditionally considered the author of many of the Psalms, and is represented as a regal and contemplative figure. Jeremiah, one of the major prophets of the Hebrew Bible, is often associated with themes of judgment and covenant and is depicted in a reflective, perhaps sorrowful, pose.
The Well of Moses is a seminal work in the development of European sculpture, marking a departure from the more rigid and stylized Gothic tradition towards a greater naturalism that would come to characterize the Renaissance. Sluter's work is noted for its sophisticated use of drapery, the emotional depth of the figures, and the detailed rendering of facial features, all of which contribute to the sense of presence and individual character of the prophets.
The Well of Moses was originally painted and gilded, traces of which still remain, adding to the understanding of its original polychromatic appearance. The monument has suffered from weathering and vandalism over the centuries, including the destruction of the crucifixion group during the French Revolution. Despite this, the remaining sculptures of the prophets, including those of David and Jeremiah, continue to be admired for their artistic mastery and historical significance. The Well of Moses remains an important cultural landmark and is considered one of Claus Sluter's masterpieces, reflecting the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance in European art.
